That strange thing coming out of the block is an aftermarket crankcase ventilation valve. The original was just a rubber tube that came out and was sort of aimed at the intake flame...

Just a thought; caustic solution is very old school. There is some engine cleaning nowadays that uses solvent.
If cam bearings are not worn, then they might be saved that way.
