Loud Clacking

After many unsuccessful tries, I finally had to cut the spring, retaining washer and keepers off of the broken valve stem with a Dremel tool. Would that I had done that right off! Who knew one could...

Actually, the valve stem moves freely through the guide and I...

Jammed Valve Keepers

I have the same problem with the #4 exhaust valve. It might be from water getting back into the cylinder. Regardless, did you get the keepers out? How?

Thanks,

Angry Load Clacking

The keepers appear to be really stuck inside the retaining washer. I am using the Lisle tool under the retaining washer to tighten the spring and I have been hitting the top of the remaining valve...

By the way, the keepers are refusing to drop through the retaining washers. Probably rusted like the valve was in the guide. Soaking them. Hopefully they...

Loud Clacking Update

I guess we'll keep those holes plugged. I wish I could go to fresh water. My Sabre 28 is great but there just is not any room at the front between the engine and the companionway steps. No room for...

Loud Clacking Update

Well, I paid a mechanic to get the head off. The mechanic was skeptical that it would be worth dealing with this 1974 A4 because it's raw water cooled but all the studs came out without any corrosion...

Loud Clacking Update

Thanks, Dave. Missed your last email before I turned the page.

I did use the feeler gauge and it did push the valve up with a couple of "nick, nick" sounds but now the top of the valve is so high...

Loud Clacking Update

No luck getting the valve to move. Tried heat too. I can see through the exhaust port (with a mirror, tough access) that there is rust on the valve shaft and the valve guide. I wonder how long that...

The front valve moves up and down and it feels like the valve in the rear is stuck open. I squirted it with MMO and PB Blaster and tried to gently tap it down with the allen wrench but no go. So I...

With difficulty I managed to get the old washer to seal, apparently.

Apparently because after starting right up and running for a few minutes, the engine would die. Fuel delivery problem.
