I have the same problem with the #4 exhaust valve. It might be from water getting back into the cylinder. Regardless, did you get the keepers out? How?

Well, I paid a mechanic to get the head off. The mechanic was skeptical that it would be worth dealing with this 1974 A4 because it's raw water cooled but all the studs came out without any corrosion...

I did use the feeler gauge and it did push the valve up with a couple of "nick, nick" sounds but now the top of the valve is so high...

Couldn't budge the valve regardless of piston location. Got the manifold off and valve cover. I'll post pics later. But here is what i found:eek: last valve gunked up. Valve stuck about 1/4-3/8" up....
