So the 3.4A target is arbitrary and you will go further? The situation I"m is down to 2.2A after 3.0Ohms of external resistance on a 3.2Ohm coil. The engine starts right off and runs fine. Is...

Wink Faith or voodoo

How do we know a coil is fried? In my case, there have been a number of shut downs that appear to be caused by too high current. The report from the boat that day was that it shut down several...

There were at least 5 shut downs on this new coil. I replaced the coil but had to order resistors so there was a delay with just the new coil installed. The same shut down pattern was reported but...

Smile The fix

We finally got the resistors installed. Purchased two list above from NAPA only to find the 0.85 unit really measurses at 1.2. No bother we needed more than that anyhow.

So, the new ignition...

FWIW -

I agree with an edited end result. The advent of cheap digital photography, video feeds, and support for amateur mechanics has produced a wealth of information. We sort of have this...

Talking Happened to me

I defer to the better mechanics already involved but this same scenario played out for me last year. It took many oil changes to get all the water out. Please take a care here.

Draining the carb...

Thumbs up Thanks Rob

I've measured the alternator output several times but not over time. The cockpit gauge has not been unstable, however, the engine shuts down abruptly too. I'll clip the multimeter on and see what...

The results so far are mixed.

We had to rely on locally acquired parts and NAPA was the best vendor of the bunch. The did not have the Echlin Resistors IR11 1.35ohms and ICR5500 0.885 ohms so...

Only ran it until it shut down and put tentative fingers to the coil. Decided then to replace the unknown-aged coil. The owners report several years of sudden shut downs and exasperation. As long...

My error - I did take the reading from the - Post on the Coil. Will re test but this is still too low.

I agree with the two points 1. Fix the voltage drop 2. replace the coil.

David- thanks

No ballast resistor found. But you know boats have all sorts of places to hide. It did not appear to be within sight of the engine. I doubt it there.

The EI was removed. Now...

Coupler cutoff

The angle grinder cutoff the flange, the dremel split the coupler, the cold chisel broke the seal. I did this never-ending work with the leaking steel gas tank out of the boat. It made working in...
