Two cents re: the original post.

Oversize wire is not a problem. Just don't use smaller gauged wire. [Be sure to use the properly sized connectors. I have had problems trying to make do with what...

 ...interesting. This sounds like a dwell or back EMF issue.

(1) Too much dwell increases the energy dumped into the coil.

I had the same problem so I installed a lighter cable wire. But then the cable could vibrate out of position. The carburetor spring had to be changed with a weaker one. Still not great. I can't win...

Well I certainly stirred the pot. Yes, one can find coils that need a ballast. I just can't imagine that a simple flat head 4 cylinder engine needs anything fancy. Maybe Pertronix and others will...

On Ballasts:

No ballast resistors are required for Atomic 4 coils. The Flame Thrower coil that Moyer sells (use to sell?) does not require one. This isn't me talking; this is what the Flame...

It looks like you have a spacer on top of your carburetor which might have been for a PCV valve. Not sure. I have a different set-up. The scavenger tube goes to the intake manifold, yes?

I did a guestimate on prop pitch for a 3000 rmp shaft and six knots. It's a SWAG. I have never seen a 5" pitch prop.

Three posts in a row. I'll be quiet now.

Yes, I'd like to be able to go to sea in various climes, too, and keep the misses and me cozy in the cabin. AC power makes a lot of cheap comforts available.

Sweet numbers. Wish i had 'em. My Sabre 28 only weighs 7500 lb. Hull speed is about six knots. I fear the A-4 is too much power. In my fantasies, I want to get a 2:1 reduction and run the engine...

Here is the deal on HP, speed, carbon, and vacuum as I understand it.

The HP / speed curve has to do with gasoline engine design principles. If you spin faster, you can feed more fuel into the...

Hi Sony,
You have me thinking about rpm. On the engine smell, there was never any smoke noticeable. Are you saying that the crankcase smell is, by definition, blow-by? Is there a word for the...

Didn't have any big blow-by. Just regular crankcase engine smell. Low RPMs is the primary cause of carbon in my boat. The plugs are always a little sooty. My cruising speed is 1700 rpms. Vacuum...

I fixed the exhaust smell in my boat in 2009. This fix uses the engine compartment blower (assuming you have one) so it works independent of engine rpm, stalling, load, or mood. No PCV valve needed.
