Yes, I can do that easily and I should have tried it. But if that really is the problem, shouldn't it have continued to pump after it spurted out the one dollop of water? Still, worth a try.

OK, I think I can say that the problem is solved. I replaced the elbow. I had also bought the Tee but it was not easy to remove the two sensors on it so I thought I should take things one at a time....
