I too have used a spark plug for checking spark...

I agree with Tom. Something catastrophic for the EI happened. I have R&R'd many a failed units of various EI's over the years and the worst I have seen was an external scorch on the unit a few times....

There were no vac advances supplied with the A-4 as it is a load duty engine!

If you do find the dist of your choice go for the EI unless it has a "new out of the box cam" as setting of the points...

Cool Jet removal?

Guys, remember the jet is the smallest orifice in the fuel stream so with a good air gun the jets passages can be blown free of gunk and debris in the passages by blowing through the jet in both...

Ernst, when you shut it down check the spark again to be sure it is still the "snappy blue" spark you started with. Check it cold and keep the stuff around so you can again immediately after running....

Graphite is way to conductive to be around and electrical at all and especially HIGH Voltage like the ignition and a wet environment to boot. Use a nonmetallic light grease when done cleaning.

I suspect both a breech in the manifold AND an intermittent coil, they fail when they get hot and "cook" if the key is left on.

Wink Go 4 it

28, I would not hesitate on the EI upgrade. It is the most "bang for the buck" you can get for an old A-4. By now the distributor cams are shot so setting the points by gap is NO GOOD as the correct...

Greg, nice work. Both MMI and Indigo offer new "lighter" springs that advance the timing a bit faster than the stock springs. The "quicker" advance is because the fuels today "burn" better.

Why would freewheeling be a problem in docking?...

Why would freewheeling be a problem in docking? There is no real power being delivered to the shaft, just the friction of the unit which is easily stoped by hand.

OR your reverse band is to tight....

Are you talking about freewheeling in neutral under sail? If so just put it in forward and she'll stop spinning. I never let my Indigo freewheel and barely even noticed it was there.

PS

Edward, the short small diameter is for the seal and a nic or two won't hurt as they can be "smoothed" and a bit of sealant will take care of the rest.

Good luck.
