Finally got around to getting it fixed. The shop said it wasn't obvious what was wrong with it, but they put in new brushes and bearings anyway for about $70.

2800 would only be doable with a reduction gear and/or planning hull. I think I hit about 2400-2600 flat out. 5 inches manifold is probably around 2100-2200 RPM, which is an easy low strain cruise...
