Cutting valve seats
Many thanks for the caution. I will try to coax one of my experienced neighbors aboard for this task. I can well imagine how the carbide blade treatment can go sidways pretty quickly.

Sticky valves and corrosion, next steps
Thanks to all who have weighed in. My next steps will include reworking the exhaust hot section to reduce the splashback/moisture issues that appear to be the primary cause of internal corrosion of...

Exhaust riser
I think the corrosion is both external and internal, due to leaking heat exchanger and salt air via exhaust section.

#4 sticky valves, again.
OK, I know, I've been here before; some people never learn. Last couple years I was busy remodeling, then two grandsons born 2K mi. & 6K mi. away. So my 40 y.o. A4 reminds me about the true cost of...

Valve replacement, etc.
Well, after varied attempts to loosen and release the #4 exhaust valve from below/side, I gave up...cleared out space (alternator, coil, manifold, heat exchanger, etc.) and pulled the head. Still...

Dave, thanks for your response. Alas, I did not fog the engine at shutdown. (I will going forward)

unsticking valves?
18 months ago I shared some valve work here, pulling the head, manifold, etc. and replacing/re-seating the #4 valves. Once again, the boat got has gotten limited attention and play time and my #4...

Valve seating and gas tank Q's
As far as the exhaust valve seat went, I glued the suction cup from a lapping tool to a 1/4" shaft and used a 90 degree angle chuck with my variable speed drill for the lapping. I gather the next...

"hot" temp reading
From the looks of things, the engine's been FWC for a long time, and there's little or no inside corrosion that I could see. I replaced the manifold and new elbow fittings, along with checking flow...

Getting into it...update
Greetings from the lighter side-
Yesterday I celebrated Dec. 1 by taking the boat for haul-out, removing quarter-sized barnacles from the prop., replacing zincs, and cleaning the bottom. Indeed, the...

Yes, the #4 intake is fine, as were the rest of the valves, all of which I removed, cleaned up and lapped, then put 'em all back in. It was a zen exercise. #4 exhaust is rusted with one sizable pit...

The journey continues, with #4 valves seemingly intact, though gunked up a bit. While I notice no cracks or chips, the exhaust valve edge has a ragged look so I'm thinking replace the two of them,...

While I didn't think I was up to the task, not having big bucks to pay someone else I've gone ahead and torn into it:eek:. The probelm(s): leaking gas tank got too bad to ignore...
