need a screw - ha

Darn it SuperDave, I really need that set screw.

Before the wedge and the hitting, that shaft wasn't moving-like frozen on. The shifter still worked but poorly without going into detents between...

Shifter Assembly

HI-
I've got 2 issues:

1) What size is the set screw for the shifting arm? I've discovered mine does not have one in place.

2) I had to work on releasing the shifter from its shaft since due...

spring/pin gone on shifter

Dear Don,
My throttle drags along when I shift gears. When I undo the round metal circle holding the two together I note that there is a hole where presumably a pin should be to engage the ring's...

Waiting to Exhale

Dear Fraternity,

Elvis has left the building. The engine is fixed with the third head and valve job completed or so it appears. A brief sea trial with temperature stable, good and sustaining...

Head #3

Praise be to the website. SUPERDAVE has flown in to the rescue and given me a spare head to try. Third time is a charm I'm hoping!

Don-why Two?

HI Don,
I'm still curious about your take on the use of 2 head gaskets, esp with my low end compression, and the rate I'm going through heads (!). Do you consider it essential and why?

More agony..

I need an exorcist. Have hole in the 2nd head I've tried. Does anyone think from the picture above, the holes along the water jacket side could be welded up?

Why 2 head gaskets?

Dear Don, et. al.,

If I am experiencing low compression, why can't I just use one head gasket instead of 2? My marina mate who helps me is dying for me to use only 1.

Don, et. al.,
Valve job completed including all valve keepers in place, clearances. Assembled all parts and engine ran in forward in slip for the first time! Bad cylinder #2 which was 64 rose to 85!...

I did it!

Thanks Tom. Nice to know someone else when through my hell. Heavy blue marine grease helped and I'm sure little fingers too. I can't imagine a man's fingers ever doing it. But I made it through.

valve keepers

Hello,
Has anyone actually put valve keepers back on with the engine in place? I have managed to put 4 of the 8 back on successfully by using a little grease inside them, magnetising them a little...

Extender Bolt

Don also sells an extender for that difficult nut although the one I bought wasn't serviceable since I still didn't have sufficient room to even get it in place. I managed to get an open ended combo...

2 Head Gaskets???

Don,
Pls don't tell me I need to use 2 of those head gaskets during replacement. I only ordered one of those expensive buggers.

Also, do you feel it is necessary to remove the studs that did not...

Headless!

Don,
The exhaust valve clearances were all off registering less than .005. Decided to try the head anyway from inside boat. I hearily recommend the use of brass wedges. After good hits on a nut on...

throttle up test

Don,
I finally performed the acceleration test in neutral as described. I do not have any hestiate or backfiring in neutral. It does throttle up explosively and needs to be brought back down in...

heat

Believe it or not, I had a friend lay fiberglass mats around the engine (yes-and the gas tank) and blowtorch the last stubborn bolt off in order to disconnect the shaft. It worked. On my boat, I've...

Don,
The carb has been opened and rebuilt, main jet checked, floats checked. Everything about the carb should be OK. I'm not totally clear on the acceleration test. This weekend, since I could not...

I did put on a primer bulb on a while back in order to get it to start earlier on. It doesn't even seem to need it now. I can start fine in neutral. Electric fuel pump was replaced and...

Idle is only option

Don,
Thanks for that. Unfortunately idling is my only option other than reverse. It just keeps dying in forward gear. We've revved it enough to get it to live in gear for a couple of minutes but...
