It is my understanding that early models did not have an oil fill at the flywheel end of the engine. The oil fill was at the transmission cover.

Without the combustion there is much less force on the piston-rod-crank. It is just going up and down and round and round. Combustion is a huge force on the piston, any play in the crank journal...

It pressurizes the cylinder and you can find where the air is escaping. May be helpful in finding where the water is entering.
