Symptoms also suggests a clogged air filter or a plugged exhaust. As Dave said, probably a fuel delivery issue, but also could be air flow issue.

A small hole in the fuel lines or pick up tube will prevent a pump from getting fuel to the carb. Since the engine starts and runs well with a aux tank, perhaps that is the place to look.

Looks like it got hot at one time. I would remove the side plate behind the alternator and clean out around the cylinder walls. My fresh water engine always ran hot - ~210 F for about 10 years...
