Two new batteries = problem solved.

Thanks for the solenoid tip - that was a real issue. The taps loosened it up, but the batteries were also toast.

put new connectors on the leads, positive and negative, going to the ignition coil

Yes, Tom, ignition on, pump direct to coil.

It’s a key...three posts three positions. There’s an ammeter, water temp, and an oil pressure gauge in the panel so the wiring to the key isn’t simple.
