Thank you for your replies...always helps me get into a diagnostic frame of mind rather than "try this", "try that".
Pulled a plug and saw there was a spark when cranking, so assumed a fuel issue....

one greasy plug
I was checking my plugs yesterday and noticed the aft plug had a fair amount of thick greasy deposit on it. The forward three plugs looked clean and dry. wondering what could cause this?

You are correct, it should suck air (usually from the carb side of the engine) out through a vent aft. Some find it useful to sniff the vent with the blower running before starting to ensure there...
