I agree that installing a fuel priming bulb is a good way to verify that the fuel is getting to the engine as it does sound like some type of fuel starvation issue - in my experience the bad coil...

Thanks for the sound advice. When I loosened the nut there was not enough room in front of the bolt to take the nut off so I will need to 'work' the bolt in some way to attach the dipstick extender....
