My spare alternator is a Motorola 50 amp that came with some A4s. It took maybe 10 minutes to swap it to external regulation.

13.8 volts is the lowest I would set the regulator for the alternator. If it is lower the start battery will be very slow to charge.
For the Victron DC-DC charger, I would probably set it to come on...

17 volts or more is certainly possible when full-fielded like it seems to be in your case.

That is not how those work. That is an 18 amp DC-DC charger. When the source battery gets over a set voltage, it starts charging the destination battery at the desired voltage for that battery type...

Sort of. Bronze is better, but plenty of fittings just don't come in bronze. Practically I have yet to see an issue with my brass fittings on the engine.

It seems like there is a bad connection between the two!
