I have never had the problem with the heat distorting the cockpit floor, I know that the previous owner must of had the dry stack replaced... I have not had the need to touch...

Just for chuckles, I would check the compression... if the engine has been sitting for a while, you may have a valve or two hanging up and you are not getting full power.

Sounds like you have the adjustment too tight, the pawl is not fully engaging the notch... loosen the adjustment two notches or so, look into the transmission and engage forward, you will see where...

I have a C&C 27, 1975 so I can tell you that changing out the cutless bearing is no big deal... once you remove the shaft. carefully cut the old bearing with a sawzall or by hand with a hacksaw......
