milky oil

Hey Folks,

I am totally new to the forum world so bear with me. my 1975 27' O"Day (new to me) has a few problems:

1- i think the oil in the gearbox looks milky. i will drain it tomorrow and re-fill with good oil and then run it for a few minutes and check the oil again for contamination. i'll do that a few times but my gut tells me the engine has an issue. what is the order of things i should check should i find the new oil becoming muddy?

2- i have a slow drip from the front of the water pump while running. do i need to drop the water out of the block before i pull the pump? and is there a seal on the front end of the pump/shaft?

Welcome aboard the forum. We're glad you are here.

To get the ball rolling I'm going to make a few assumptions:
RWC (raw water cooled)
Late model engine
Oberdurfer water pump

After you remove the water pump and pull the impeller and shaft you will see that it has two seals. One seal keeps water from leaking out of the pump. The other seal blocks oil from leaking into the pump and water from leaking into the oil. If both seals are shot water can get into the oil by way of the pump. Getting the water pump squared away would be a good place to start with the water in oil diagnosis.

You do not need to drain the engine before you remove the water pump. Do rembember to close the through hull valve though. (just kidding)

Put up a post if you need help.

TRUE GRIT

PS: Buy yourself a copy of the Moyer Manuel

Also note the "gearbox oil" IS the engine oil ;)

Thanks!

Thanks to both replies. i will close the raw water intake valve and pull the water pump. yep, i knew the gearbox oil is the engine oil.

is there a link to the manual from moyer?

Just look in the online catalog for the manual, and all sorts of info.
