Thanks Bill, just ordered mine.

Please give us a review when you get it, it looks interesting.

I am interested to see how this works out too, and if it is any better than my story.
My buddy Smitty bought one...his required a 5v USB connection for power, but provided a WiFi connection to a phone/tablet, etc. Sitting at the base of the mast with the probe in a hole looking for issues (in bright sunlight trying to see the probe's output on your phone) was not very useful..I ended up at the top of the mast for 2h 30m running a new wire :D, but I certainly can see its usefulness in the correct situation!

My brother got one just like it. Loves it.

I see they call it an endoscope in some descriptions. That's just not right.

Please call it a borescope. We're getting old and sensitive here.

I've been wanting a borescope for years and just this morning decided to spring for one from Harbor Freight Tools to the tune of $60, then Bill's thread popped up a few hours later. Once I confirmed the necessary iphone moqo app was free this was a no brainer, saved me $25.

Great timing.

The non-wifi version has been available for less than $10 for awhile. I have one on every boat and toolbox. As mentioned, trying to see into a mast in sunlight is very difficult without getting the phone/laptop into the cabin. I have one with a 10m cord, but it only works on some devices due to violating the USB spec. Also, the corded model requires your smartphone to support OTG connections (USB master) - Samsung does, Moto doesn't, Iphone might.

"Please call it a borescope. We're getting old and sensitive here." - copy that.

If you have an iphone, you might want to look at this one:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Worked pretty well for me.

ndutton 10-11-2017 09:28 AM

My interest is and has always been a portable job site scope rather than specifically for boat use. Getting a peek inside wall cavities would have been a great advantage in the past.

toddster 10-11-2017 07:15 PM

Excellent! I see some of them are offered with 10M cables. Last time I shopped for these, they were still cost-prohibitive. I really, really need to know what is going on about ten feet up my sewer pipe. But really, really don't want to dig it up just on speculation.

sastanley 10-11-2017 08:00 PM

toddster, roots.

toddster 10-11-2017 08:22 PM

It's not the trees. It's the females. Disgustingly off-topic, but... roots in plastic pipe? Maybe, but I've never seen it.
I'm suspecting some complicating factor, like a collapsed pipe or maybe some kind of calcification - a few years ago I caught some helpers I hired washing heavily encrusted drywall and paint tools in the sink... they might have been doing it for a week.

Anyway, every time I have a gaggle of females in the house, (AirBnB) no matter how explicit my lecture, I end up snaking tampons, "wipes," towels, etc. from that one spot. Very close to where the line from the garage meets the main line.

Now I threaten to mail any material I recover back to them. Of course, AirBnB doesn't actually give me their address, but they might not know that. Haha... I could maybe scope the sewer as part of the check-out procedure.

Get the cheapest borescope you can find. This sounds like a single use application.

ndutton 10-14-2017 05:53 PM

Mine arrived, easy setup on my iphone. I can't wait to use it on the jobsite.

HOTFLASH 10-14-2017 07:19 PM

What's it for on a boat?

So how might you use this in a sailboat/A4 application? Why the excitement?

It could be snaked quite a way up an exhaust hose looking for the all too common internal collapse. Someone else mentioned a look up inside the mast. How about a look inside a fuel tank? The kit comes with hook, magnet and mirror attachments for the camera end.

My immediate interest is a view inside residential walls as I'm fishing wires.

edwardc 10-14-2017 10:23 PM

And let's not forget a view inside the cylinders through the spark plug hole to observe valves and pistons without removing the head.

ndutton 11-04-2017 08:53 AM

I used my new wifi borescope for the first time this week with resounding success. In trying to fish a length of MC cable between two 1" holes I hit an unknown obstruction. I slid the stiff camera cable in one of the holes with a slight bend to aim it and in a matter of seconds it showed an old roof that had been built over. With a longer auger I drilled through the old roof and was able to complete the project.

lat 64 11-04-2017 07:39 PM

That's pretty cool Neil.
New project for me:
I just got Fannie Mae to accept a short-sale offer on an old house that needs EVERYTHING redone. I think I can get this purchase(borescope) past committee now.

I'll just let her(admiral) read your post.
