Broken temperature sensor

The wire leading from the temp gauge broke of at the connection to the brass/bronze sensor bolted into the front of the engine. Is it possible to reattach this, or must the entire wire be replaced back to the gauge? I've considered operating without the gauge, but I know I will be constantly climbing down the stern ladder to test the water by hand.
Or should I replace the entire assembly including the gauge?

IF just the end of the wire broke off and the sensor itself is not damaged, just go buy a wire crimp kit and put a new end on the wire.

Should not be a big deal.

Finally was able to take a longer look at the sensor.
The wire from the gauge terminates in a round lug that is attached to the brass fitting on the front if the enginine by a bolt.
It is this bolt that has broken off.
Looking in the bolt hole there appears to be a thin wire or spring that may have wrapped around the bolt.
Could I simply use epoxy putty to hold the bolt in place, or does the entire brass piece need to be replaced?
Thanks

Mike,
With the stud broken off, I'd replace the sending unit. Those unit tend to be pretty tight in the head, and I'd recommend using a 6 point socket and a 1/2" drive breaker bar to remove the broken unit.
Trying to patch the broken unit is a losing proposition.

Tapping a closed end wrench with hammer worked for me.
I like use flat wrenches when ever possible because I have a better feel that way.
If the sending unit won't budge try starting the engine and let it get up to operating temperature. With the engine still running see if you can persuade it to loosen. The heat + vibration will help the sending unit to loosen.

TRUE GRIT

Thank you for the information, gentlemen.
As it turns out i have suffered a season ending injury and all boat work will have to be rescheduled for late fall, early spring.
