Which primer to use?
Hello Aforians!
I'm attempting my first overhaul. Got everything back from the shop, and I need to apply primer. Several people on the forum suggest Rustoleum "Rusty Metal Primer." I found Rustoleum "Rust Reformer" at Home Depot, but it says only for surfaces that don't exceed 200 F. Do I need a higher temp primer? What is the exact Rustoleum people recommend for the A4? |
I used Duplicolor engine primer and Duplicolor engine paint. It seems to be holding up ok, but its only been about four years.

Duplicolor primer / Duplicolor paint here too. Holding up well, and it comes in pretty much any color you can imagine.

zinc oxide
If you want to get serious about priming use yellow zinc oxide (aka "cold galvanizing").
Degrease with solvent, immediately spray with brake cleaner, dry only with compressed air. Do not touch the metal with fingers or rag. Spray several coats of yellow zinc oxide (spray bomb). Overcoat with desired engine paint. Overalls, heavy rubber gloves, and full face mask + good ventilation. Do not skimp on safety. |

I don't know how, but my engine would get that one pregnant if it could.

Kudos Jerry, one of the best engine one liners I've heard:):)nicely stated.
A lil comedy goes a long way! Dave Neptune  |
Just like any other paint job, prep is key. little things like fingerprints also affect adhesion, as Marty mentioned.

In April, I used Rustoleum 249340 High Heat Primer gray , with Rust-Oleum 241232 High Heat Ultra Enamel Aged Copper Spray over that. It seems to be holding up very well.
