Lower water pump extendo bolt alternative?

1 Attachment(s)
Will this work? Or why won't this work as a long bolt for the lower hole of the water pump?

This is a 4 1/2" grade 5, 3/8-16 bolt with a nut tightened/bottomed on the threads.

This is cheap at less than $2.00. Which is good since I can keep a couple on the boat so when I drop it into the bilge, I can simply put in a second $2.00 replacement. :)

Getting to that lower bolt with the original short bolt is torture in a Pearson 10M. Especially when the engine is hot and the cabin temp is 90+ degrees.

Looks like what I made up for my boat. I think I used Loctite on the nut.

In time you'll realize, as the rest of us already have, that MMI products are carefully thought out, of the highest standards and deliver lasting value for the cost. Until then, please consider that there is merit in supporting the business that sponsors this forum that many of us feel is the best forum - boating related or otherwise - on the internet.

Oh, it would probably work, but..

I myself have been known to create a cheap alternative instead of a more expensive and elegant one, but not in this case. I have one of those extender bolts. I am willing to spend another $18 to have something specially designed for that purpose. I would gladly fish it out of the bilge. Moyer Marine has been very helpful to us A4 owners over the years, and deserves our support for providing a part that solves a problem.

Examining this MMI product vs. a home grown clone for example:
  • Stainless steel vs. grade 5 steel in an area that is commonly wet and for us ocean guys, wet with salt water. If you think the lower bolt is hard to get to, try extracting a broken bolt stump that's rust-welded into the same location.
  • A sealing washer is included. The home grown re-inventer usually uses a split lock washer then wonders why it leaks when it didn't before. See the first bullet point when that happens.
  • Threaded portion length. If you read the link I provided earlier you'll read about the gear damage that occurs when the threaded portion extends too far into the accessory drive.
Like I said, MMI products are thoroughly thought out and perfect for our needs. As we are fond of saying around here, "Do it right, cry once."**

Not to mention that the extendo bolt is a work of art!

For those who don't know what I'm talking about...

Ok, so in other words, it will work fine.

I run a business as well, and I suspect that Moyer has a solid position in the market.

I've spent quite a bit of money with Moyer already, and I am sure I will be spending more in the future. So I'm not going to apologize for *not* buying the stainless extendo bolt! :-)

Edit:
Installed it yesterday and it works perfectly.
And using a short box wrench its really easy to install and remove.
Problem solved.

Thanks, Dave
