Rear Oil Seal Leaking
 

Hello friends,

I have isolated an oil leak to the rear oil seal. (see attached image).

How the heck to you replace that oil seal?

Has anybody done it? With the engine in place in the boat?

The attachments should help you.

Be sure to heed the attachment on the sources of other potential leaks, most of which will drain to the back of the engine and give the appearance of a leaky rear seal. Some years ago, we incurred great costs in having one of our rebuilt engines shipped back to our shop to replace a reported defective rear oil seal. We had already paid to have the first oil seal replaced by a local mechanic and it was then reported to us (by a supposedly very competent mechanic) that the second seal leaked as well, due to some mystery defect in the transmission itself. To make a long story as sort as possible, it turned out that the rear seal was perfectly OK, but Oberdorfer water pump had a defective oil seal and the oil followed the top of the oil pan back to the area of the rear seal.

Replacing the old oil seal with the engine still in the boat is no real hassle if you have reasonable access to the area. I found Don's instructions to be quite helpful....they are quite clear and follow a simple sequence that is easy to follow. I did buy two of the tools he sells to make the job easier: The output coupling puller and the output coupling holder were invaluable to me. The output coupling installer would have been nice, too, but the removing tool can be used to do the same thing if you buy longer bolts for it. If you run into major problems you can always call Don. He has never failed to be helpful when asked.
