Reversing Ability
I've started working with a local expert to improve the reversing ability. No matter what adjustment either of us made, the boat would only hold reverse at low engine speed and only with light touch of the forward, neutral, reverse selector.
If someone moved the direction selector too much too quickly, the reverse bar sometimes came out of the shift yoke. The feedback from our local expert is that the whole reversing gear system feels looser than what he would expect. As Al noted earlier in this thread, the reverse bar did not sit deeply in the shift yoke or look quite perpendicular to the drive train. He found the reversing band brace to be heavily worn. Most of the material is gone from it where it rubbed. https://photos.google.com/share/AF1Q...9mMEtmQm45NV9R I believe this explains the alignment issue I was having with the brake band reversing bar and shift yoke. I've ordered a new one as well as some other parts such as a new brake band reversing bar from Moyer Marine. I am excited as I think this may reconcile the feedback I've received here and what I've observed for quite some time. Wanted to share for wisdom from the experts here and to hopefully contribute a little. Has anyone seen this kind of issue before and if so, are there any other concerns I should investigate? thanks again. |
We are having a problem of access to make the replacement. I have heard we need to pull the engine to make the repairs.

Forward can be locked in so you can cruise but reverse is you holding the shifting handle to keep the band tight enough to drive the prop!
No pressure on the handle means little or no reverse. Dave Neptune  |

I modified my reverse cam so the gear would stay in reverse. I think the photos explain..

Al, very nice.

Make sure that the transmission shifting bar running through the transmission housing is sitting on the pins on the yoke, you added a picture of that band, that was a major, DURRRR move for me. Make sure those arms lie in the pins otherwise itll never line up.

Thank you all for the replies. Al is a total expert.
Has anyone ever seen a band brace that is so worn as mine? Our next plan is to live with the alignment issue and make a reversing bar that is long enough in its tooth to the shift yoke to still connect regardless. |
I've got reverse like I've never had it in the two years I've owned the boat. It now behaves as everyone said it should.
I had a new, hardened steel part made to remain in the shift yoke with a rolling pin. Working great so far. https://imgur.com/OuIvQ0Y |
