Atomic 4 with 3 Cylinders?

I have been coaching a new A4 owner as he has been navigating his way down the ICW. It all started with him not being able to make more than about 3 knots and he contacted me to see if there was...

Dirty Fuel

Pitching in big waves brings to mind stirring up muck lying in the bottom of your fuel tank. Take a look at your in line fuel filter and also drain the carb bowl and see what comes out. If there is...

Get the small nuts or sacrifice a socket by grinding it down to fit. The thermostat housing studs are head studs just like all of the others except a little longer. Using a socket head capscrew is...

Rick,

The thought just occurred to me that since you have a C&C32, was it perhaps built in Canada? For many years a "de-tuned" version of the Atomic 4 known as the "Stevedore" was sold in Canada....

Rick,

It sounds like the pitch of your Indigo Prop is too low, maybe down in the 6 range. That is about the only thing that would explain its poor performance. The only other thing that would...

Rick,

I see from my records that you had Indigo Prop S/N 1474 on a C&C 30. Indigo props are installed on nearly 60 C&C 30s with no reports of the issues you have outlined.

With your 25 ft...

Higher RPM

There are two main reasons to achieve higher WOT engine RPM with your direct drive Atomic 4.

The first has to do with increasing cruise RPM to somewhere around 2000. Many A4s in the fleet are...

Boat Speed

What speed is the boat making at WOT? Typically, over-propped direct drive A4s will get a boat up to hull speed but the RPM will be in the range you are finding. Such a setup is hard on the engine...

You certainly need to check your engine to prop shaft alignment as a first step. Assuming that a blade(s) of the prop were not damaged during the splashing process, one other thought comes to mind...

Indigo Prop for Sure

That is indeed an indigo prop, no question about it. And it is 10” in diameter.

You should try taking the shift linkage loose from the engine and see if the lever on the engine will go farther in...

Make sure the spark plugs are fully torqued. If too loose, they will not transfer heat to the head properly.

Electronic Ignition Thoughts

quentind,

I am sorry to hear that you have had problems with you Indigo AT4 ignition.

Let me first ask if your module has a Red LED on one end of the module? If not, then the module is about...

Proper Torque on plugs

A spark plug that is not properly seated will have less heat transfer to or from the head. A poorly seated plug will run hotter than a properly seated plug. An easy check.

Carb Needle

Fuel pressure and gravity move the needle down and the float lifts it up to shut off fuel and modulate the level of fuel in the bowl of the carburetor. Some carbs do have a little wire clip that I...

What type of pressure gauge?

Is your pressure gauge mechanical or electrical? If electrical, you have to attach a ground wire between the engine and the filter base in order for the gauge to work.

Back of the Envelope

I think we can get a little better idea of Clark800's cooling situation with a simple thermodynamic analysis. Here goes my shot at it:

You can reasonably assume that an A4 running at 2000 RPM in...

While 60 psi at a cold start up is higher than we would like to see, my experience with the Indigo filters tells me that it can be significantly higher on A4s with great oil pumps. The filter...
