Here is a pic of the thermostat after soaking it in muratic acid. I did this with the head nuts as well. You have to degrease first (acid doesnt penetrate oil) / soak in acid for 15-30 mins / rinse...

(*** SEE post #4 - MOST IMPORTANT - block the 4 oil drain holes tight with tissue so you dont drop a keeper down there :0 )
You need a special valve tool...
