If you proceed directly to removing the head you eliminate the ability to make two of the most important diagnostic tests we have, compression and cooling system pressure tests. In addition, you...

Gumption required

No need to stress yourself yet about removing the head. Just check the manifold outlet. That is where obstruction usually occurs. There could be junk (impeller pieces? rust?) visible at the outlet as...

Tough to tell whether you have an engine issue or a heat exchanger issue.
First thing I'd do is remove the thermostat and leave it out until you get the overheating under control. See what happens...

Hello Mel.

The forum thread linked below (starting in 2011 I think) provides a helpful conversation about the purpose of the vented cap and the trade-offs involved in modifications to it:

I agree with Neil. Generally if there is a leak into the combustion chamber from either a head gasket or the exhaust manifold you should find a plug or two that may look very clean. When I say...

If there is antifreeze in it you might smell the antifreeze. If not, well the loss is very minor and not likely the cause of the white smoke.

Here's something that does happen in spring and fall....

Galiano?

Hey Mel,

Did you consider keeping your boat in Montague? When we lived in Kits we put a mooring down in Montague Harbour, and that worked great for us. Cost $2000 all in, which we recouped when we...

This is easily solved in one step but it must be followed to the letter. Buy a new coil by calling the Moyer Marine parts line. Do not go to NAPA, do not go to Lordco, do not buy a resistor, do not...

The box says the primary resistance is 0.7 ohms. No external resistor? Yep, you're doomed to another failure.

If your NEW coil requires a ballast resistor, you need it when you install the coil,...

To make sure I contribute to the thread, I have the same experience as Tom. You can keep the engine running supplying only 9-10 volts or so to the coil. (I did this with resistors in series ahead of...

Mel, Sorry to have to say this, but it seems that you have completely missed the boat on what is causing your coil over-heat issue. Do yourself a favor and go to the parts store and buy an ignition...

Our original A4 went thousands of hours on the original coil. IMHO since these old fashioned coils have not been used on new cars in ages, the quality has gone down. I surmise 2nd tier manufacturers...

Coil Mounting

Allow me to add my final thoughts on the matter. I believe Neil and I are saying pretty much the same thing: coil failure is caused by coil primary wire insulation breakdown due to heat. That heat...

Yes, Neil. I moved the coil off the engine out of exasperation but largely on principle. That principle is that heat is the biggest killer of insulation. No more testing was done to determine how...
