Hey, I just discovered your message here - I haven't logged into the forum for a long while. Sorry for taking so long to get back to you.

I'd be glad to offer any assistance I can.

Tim, good afternoon. Hoping you are still around in the RIC area. I recently bought a boat with an Atomic 4 and am looking forward to tearing it down this winter. Hoping to use you as a resource perhaps?

Yes, I've done electrolysis on some very rusty, crusty old tools and machine parts. I've concluded it's overkill much of the time. If you've got something very crusty, with parts stuck together, it can work wonders. Other than that, if you've just got something that's rusty, there are other mechanical methods that work perfectly well to prepare the surface for paint or powder coating.

Bill, getting ready to de-rust a bike frame for a powder coating. The frame is totally rusted and been only around the beach and has had a lot of salt exposure. I'm thinking of putting together an electrolysis tub and wanted to know if you have ever done so in any of your restorations. I am not so worried about the finish as I am about actually sealing for a long lasting "powder" job

    Bill,
If you are considering a used engine, I'll let mine go for considerably less than $1500.

it's looking like i'll have to use my 9.9 johnson for the rest of the summer -- if nothing else to get my boat back to her winter base

so re. adding electric starting -- can you tell me how it's done? is there a kit? where would i get it? what else will i need to purchase? what is the approx. cost?

any advice re. putting the o/b on my transom/ unfortunately, it's a short shaft johnson 9.9

feel free to email me directly at keithems@gmail.com if you'd like

Given how long it took us to figure out how to get it on there (which was a pain, given the big studs that stick out the front of the crankshaft), I don't think it was worth the effort.

No, I don't think it was worth the effort of using the engine stand. It's difficult to hook the engine up on the stand - it must have taken us an hour to finally get it on there - and I didn't like it, because there is a fair amount of weight just hanging way out there - seems a lot of strain to put on the casting.

Yeah, it did make it a little easier to flip the engine over and then back when putting the crank and pistons back in. But after putting the crank in, I eventually ended up pretty much just leaving it sideways for putting in the pistons. I could have done that with it lying on the bench. And as soon as I had the oil pan on, I took it off the stand and put it in the dolly I had built.

The Moyer Manual describes just putting it on a bench and flipping it over as needed. If I were to do it again, I don't know that I would bother putting it on the stand. I had mine on the stand for I think maybe a day or two.

    Sweet! Thanks

Was it worth using the engine stand? I found one at Walmart for $50.

Take a look at this and tell me if you think it would work for the A4...

Which bolt holes did you use?
