I am in Riva, MD just outside Annapolis. As I try to decide whether to spend the money on someone else's expertise I'm thinking I would actually be more willing to try this with the engine out of the boat, in spite of the extra work required to do that. I would have to learn every step of the process from scratch, and, while recognizing that this isn't brain surgery, there are many ways for the process to go off the rails. Simple logistics like getting the necessary muscle power to get the thing off the mounting rails, out of the cabin and over the side to a waiting pickup...hey, where do I get the pickup? Then creating a stand in my garage for the work, procuring the necessary specialty tools (e.g. spring compressor), etc. vs. dropping a valve keeper into the crankcase while struggling for access. So that is the balancing act. Anyway, I'll keep you apprised of progress along the way..meanwhile she purrs along on 3.

I don't have a lot of experience with the A4 but I am learning. Haven't done any major surgery on it yet. If you don't have the Moyer Manual then definitely get a copy. It is invaluable.
Taking the head off the engine with it still in the boat I think should be fairly straight forward since the Tartan has great engine access. I have seen people with a lot less engine access do it. Getting at the valves might a bit more difficult since they are on the port side but it could be possible.
If you haven't join the Tartan owners group on Yahoo you should and you could post a question to see if anyone has done it. Go to Yahoo Groups and search for tartansailing.
I am located in Whitby Ontario Canada. How about yourself??

Hey,
I am trying to determine whether this task is possible in the boat, especially for someone like myself who has never worked on an engine to that degree of disassembly. It seems as though as these things go it could be straight forward, but even my limited experience tells me that given the tendency for the unexpected problem to arise that removal may actually be the best course of action. I'll keep the thread going with additional information as necessary. Where are you located?

Hi ddomino, I noticed you have a Tartan 30. I do as well so I thought I would add you as a friend. I saw your post about the possible broken spring. I haven't done a spring/valve job/replacement but I would think with the excellent engine access on the T30 that you might have the ability to get at the valves are removing the head. Anyways let me know how it goes.
