Any idea what they would charge to re-grind the journals? I got one estimate already.
FOr sure I need rod bearing journals done....not sure about mains though. THey would need to measure.

I use a shop in National City - I forget the name - its on Hoover or Mckinnley st - They will mic the crank but you MUST instruct them what to do next

I need your advice on a good machine shop that can check and grind a crank. Also, take a look at some of the videos I posted ("New engine noise thread) and tell me what you think. Thanks.

I checked compression tonight and got above 100 in all 4 cylinders. Cylinder 1 was the highest at 120.

I just rebuilt the top end in Feb. New head and gaskets, cleaned all water passages. I'm hoping not to remove head, but will if indicated. I'm likely going to start tomorrow or Monday. Will check compression first though. Will keep you posted. Thanks.

Before you pull this beast do a compression test with the starter motor - anything less than 90 psi and you should be looking at top end also - could be one tired motor

With oil pressure at 20 running hot you are already at the high limit of wear in the crank bearings - the other noise that dave N heard on the video is the next bearing about to go. Get it apart, check all the bearing surfaces and then call me to see where you go from there. You will be sorry if you do half a job here- unless you enjoy pulling your engine out the boat

My memory is horrible. I'm thinking a week or two since the noise first began. Oil pressure was down to about 5 to 10 at cruising. That's about when I checked and found very low oil level. After adding 4 quarts the pressure is back up to 20...which is where it has been since I got the boat a year ago.

At this point I'm going to attempt the repair myself (with forum help) but it is nice to know you are close by.

If you feel like quoting me a price for the complete job or partial job I'd be willing to keep it in mind.
    Thanks,
    Jim Pian

I own and operate British Marine Company out of shelter Island. I Am very experienced with A4s and have exellent references for my work on them. I would be happy to assist you in anyway from advice to totally fixing the problem. I know cost is always a concern with older boats so I will work with you to minimise any costs to this repair.
Further info is required- how is oil pressure ? did the knock appear suddenly ? how long ago [engine hours]and how fast were you going when you first noticed the knock.
    You can call me 619 822 7087
