Thanks for this info. That might be a problem too. It's a rats' nest of hard to access wires behind the instrument panel in the cockpit and I've cleaned and reattached lots of them in the past. There are a few 'orphan wires' in there that are doing nothing but are bundled in with all the rest and hard to remove. I'll check the wires again. I have run tests on the old alternator and the exciter wire was not producing more than 12.7V so that is definitely under what it should be.

I have a related issue concerning the alternator and it’s wiring on my late model A4.I was running the engine at night due to no wind. The batteries drained down and when I tested alternator output I measured 11.2 V. I swapped the alternator with a new one and ran fine for 2 weeks. On the return home same problem. alternator output was 11.2V. I started suspecting wiring problem. I removed the alternator then reinstalled it. It output14.6 V when engine was throttled up. I traced my alternator wires and connections. I suspect that the wire from alternator output to ignition may have been making contact with either another wire or metal creating a short in that wire. Could that have caused the alternator to not have output? It’s running fine now and charging normallyafter pulling ignition and cleaning that connection and taping it to prevent accidental contact with wiring in tight bulkhead behind ignition.
